Injuries to left knee too much to overcome

SYDNEY, Australia -- World shot put champion C.J.
Hunter, husband of Marion Jones, has withdrawn from the Sydney
Olympics because of a knee injury.

"I am disappointed that an injury has forced me to withdraw
from the Olympic Games," Hunter said by telephone from Los
Angeles on Monday.
"Marion and I had been looking forward to competing
together in Sydney, but I am a professional athlete and injuries
are part of the game."
Jones, the world 100 meters champion, is aiming for an
unprecedented five gold medals in Sydney -- the 100 and 200
meters, both relays and the long jump.
Hunter underwent surgery eight days ago after injuring his
left knee while weightlifting in London last month.
His doctor, Tim Taft, said Hunter might have recovered in
time for the shot put final on Sept. 26, but the 31-year-old
American said he did not want to take part unless he was fully
fit.
"I am not going to compete if I can't throw better than 20
meters," he said.
